Automatic Connections with OBD Fusion® for iOS

Last Updated: Dec 21, 2017 01:08PM EST
Since version 2.2.0, OBD Fusion for iOS has supported automatic connections to Wi-Fi scan tools. The latest version (2.8.0) now enables automatic connections for the Automatic Car Adapter and supported Bluetooth LE adapters (e.g. LELink, Carista, etc.). If enabled, OBD Fusion will intelligently connect to a compatible scan tool if one is detected. Details on how the automatic connection process works for the various communication types are described below.

Wi-Fi

Automatic connections with Wi-Fi require at least one manual connection to the scan tool. OBD Fusion will store the name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID) at the time of the connection. Subsequently, if the phone is connected to this network when launching the app or when the app is running in the foreground, a connection to the scan tool will be automatically initiated.

Bluetooth LE

Automatic connections to a Bluetooth LE adapter do not require a one-time manual connection. If a supported Bluetooth LE adapter is detected within a brief duration after launching the app, a connection to the scan tool will be automatically initiated.

Automatic Car Adapter

Automatic connections with the Automatic adapter require at least one manual connection to the scan tool. This is required to complete the authentication process required by the Automatic adapter. Subsequently, if the Automatic adapter is connected to the phone when launching the app or when the app is running in the foreground, the connection process will be automatically initiated. Note: the Automatic adapter has a power-saving feature that can prevent a successful connection if the power-saving mode on the adapter is currently active. This can result in a connection failure. If this occurs, it may be necessary to manually retry connecting once the adapter comes out of sleep mode.

How to Enable Automatic Connections

To enable automatic connections, go to Settings > Preferences > Communications. Under the “General” section, set Connection to “Automatic”.
